This new after-school program is a collaboration between DSC and the Lawrence Hall of Science, developers of GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science).
The DSC Way
As the children work together on activities in the AfterSchool KidzScience™ program, they build cooperation skills and use science the way scientists do—by applying their knowledge to solve a problem or answer a question.
The AfterSchool KidzScience program is fun and engaging for children. After each day's activity, the hope is that children leave thinking “science is cool, and I can do it!"
Program Description
Each theme-based series includes four distinct kits of science exploration activities with materials for leaders and children. Activities within each kit build on the children's prior exploration and knowledge in order to enhance their understanding of a science concept. In each session, the children become engaged in that day's activity, explore a question of the day by performing tests, and then make sense of what they've experienced and discovered.
What's Coming (AfterSchool KidzScience is under development)
SERIES 1: Physical Science, available fall 2009, includes four kits:
Oobleck
Children discover the properties of a mysterious goop made of cornstarch and water. Oobleck is compelling—a great combination of fun and learning!
Magnets
Children use tricks, games, and other devices to explore the power and surprises of magnetism.
Bubbles
The magic of bubbles inspires open-ended, enthusiastic science investigations for children to understand the qualities of surface tension and other basic science principles that make bubbles so fascinating and fun to explore.
Falling and Flying
Children learn about air resistance when they design, build, and test things that fall or fly through the air.
SERIES 2: Life Science available 2010
SERIES 3: Green Science available 2010
Check back in fall 2009 for more information!
